Dr. K J Abraham, fondly known as K J among his peers, was born on September 23,
1957, as the eldest of four children in the Kanjirakkattu family in Perumbavoor, Kerala. In 1960, the family decided to pursue agriculture and migrated to Wayanad in North Kerala.
His early education took place at Vijaya High School, Pulpally, Wayanad District. Following his pre-degree course at St. Mary's College, Sulthan Bathery, Wayanad district, he pursued BSC Chemistry in 1976 at two renowned colleges - Zamorin's Guruvayurappan College, Calicut, and Govt. Brennen College Thalassery. He excelled in his studies and secured 6th rank that year in the University of Calicut.
In 1979, K J enrolled in Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore for his MBBS. During his time at CMC, he achieved remarkable results in Physiology and Biochemistry. His passion for physiology likely influenced his decision to pursue a career in General Medicine.
Upon completing his MBBS, he commenced his service at St. Mary's Mission Hospital, Manarcadu, Kottayam district, under the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Church. Subsequently, with the blessings of a local church, K J established a small Mission Hospital at Meenangadi, Wayanad district, but eventually handed it back to the church when he secured admission for a postgraduate course in medicine. This experience may have inspired his future endeavor to establish his own hospital in Wayanad.
From 1989 to 1991, he pursued his MD in General Medicine at the esteemed Government Medical College, Calicut, Kerala. Following his MD, he spent nearly nine years, from 1991 to 2000, working as a physician at Wayanad Hospital and Priya Hospital in Sultan Bathery.
With the unwavering determination and tireless effort, Dr KJ Abraham, has established KJ Medical Trust Hospital in the heart of Kalpetta, Wayanad, Kerala, in September 2000. Commenced its journey with a capacity of 40 beds, which eventually emerged as the major healthcare facility in the Wayanad district, where an average of over 100 deliveries handled each month.
Later on, the hospital relocated to a new building in Kainatty, Kalpetta, Wayanad, which boasted a spacious infrastructure capable of accommodating 40 beds. Over the years, it has evolved into a multi-specialty hospital offering services in General Medicine, Gynaecology, Paediatrics, ENT and Radiology, with a visiting Endocrinologist. The hospital thrives under the leadership of a physician whose primary focus lies in the fields of Internal Medicine and Diabetes. At present, the hospital employs around 40 dedicated healthcare staff in order to serve hospital visitors with utmost care and compassion.
In 1984, K J married Mini John, and they were blessed with three daughters: Ida Susan Abraham, who completed her MBA; Irene Anna Abraham, who pursued her BTech in Computer Science; and Dr. Evelyn Mariya Abraham, who finished her MBBS from Dr. Somerwell Memorial CSI Medical College, Karakonam, Trivandrum.
On February 4, 2023, Dr. K J Abraham passed away, and his funeral was held on Monday, February 6, 2023, at 11:30 AM at St. George Jacobite Simhasana Cathedral, Pulpally, Wayanad District.
Those who had the privilege of knowing K J will forever cherish his jovial personality, his resonant voice, his infectious laughter, and his gentle heart. His absence will be deeply missed by his family, friends, staff, and patients.
